Cord People

Bob McEwan | Ric Simpson | Don Mates | Henry Portz | Doug Johnson | Harry Golden | Lee Richardson | Lee Nelson | Ron Irwin | George Arakelian | Lee Foldenauer | Jack Richard

Lee Nelson flew big four engine seaplanes across the Pacific and the Atlantic for Pan Am in the 40s. As one of "The Greatest Generation" he island-hopped all over the South Pacific during WWII in PBM flying boats for the Navy. When he wasn't flying he was driving his supercharged Cord phaeton, which he owned from 1942 to 1948. He drove it to Yosemite National Park once. While you can't see Lee in this photo, his furry friend certainly poses prettily.

Lee made many high speed trips from LA to the the Mojave Desert where he was flying, the Cord drinking lots of aviation fuel (WWII rationing, y'know). The Cord also carried Lee across the country with his wife and small daughter when a job took him from California to New York. They stayed at the Auburn Hotel in Auburn while mechanics at the ACD Company made some repairs. Here's a First Person Story that Cord drivers will appreciate.
